5 tips for a good start with breastfeeding
Breastfeeding is natural, but every mum and baby are different. These five tips help you on your way, and remember: good support often makes the difference.
1. Focus on skin-to-skin contact and an early start
Direct skin-to-skin contact after birth helps your baby settle and latch for the first time. The earlier the start, the more smoothly breastfeeding often gets going.
2. Watch for a good position and latch
A correct position and latch prevent a lot of pain and cracks. Make sure your baby takes a big mouthful (not just the nipple) and that you sit relaxed. Let yourself be helped at the start: small adjustments make a big difference.
3. Feed on demand and learn the signals
Feed your baby on demand, so when they give hunger signals (rooting, hands to the mouth, restlessness), and don’t wait until crying starts. Feeding on demand also supports a good milk supply.
4. Trust the signs that things are going well
Enough wet and dirty nappies, a content baby after the feed and good weight gain are better guides than the clock. Your midwife monitors this together with you.
5. Ask for help in time
Doubts, pain or uncertainty are completely normal, especially at the start. Don’t wait too long to ask for help: an early, targeted approach often makes breastfeeding more comfortable and feasible. At Juno you can turn to your midwife, with the help of lactation consultant Laurine when extra expertise is needed.
