What can you do to avoid an induction?
Many couples hope for a spontaneous start of labour. Yet an induction is sometimes medically necessary. We explain what can support a natural start, and when induction is the safest choice.
What is an induction?
With an induction, labour is started artificially instead of waiting for a spontaneous start. This is done for medical reasons, for example when you are well past your due date, with certain conditions, or when it is better for the health of mum or baby.
Sometimes induction is the safest choice
Important to know: an induction is not something to avoid at all costs. In some situations it is the safest option. So always follow the advice of your midwife and doctor; together they look at what is best for your situation.
What can support a spontaneous start?
If all is well and there is no medical reason to induce earlier, your body can often take the time it needs. Good preparation helps: rest and relaxation, staying active, reducing stress and building trust in your body. These are no guarantees, but they do create favourable conditions.
Your midwife’s role
Your midwife guides you in this consideration, gives you evidence-based information and helps you make conscious choices. That way you look forward to the birth with more calm and trust, whatever start it gets.
